  • Rubbing alcohol

  4. Capillary Action: Place the pencil over a jar so the strip dips into the alcohol, but doesn’t touch the leaf mash. The alcohol will climb up the filter, bringing pigments with it.
  5. Reveal and Discuss: Watch as different bands of color travel up the filter. Discuss why different leaves might show different colors (chlorophyll, carotenoids, etc.).
