NASA To Hire Full-Time Officer In Charge of Preventing Alien Invasion and to Make Some Lucky Nerd A Legend at Their High School Reunion

Growing up as a Nerd has never been easy but now you can prove your high school classmates and guidance counselor wrong: fighting an alien invasion is now a real career.

Thanks to NASA’s latest job opening, you can now apply to be a Planetary Protection Officer.

As first reported by Business Insider and according to the job description on USAJobs.gov, NASA has an opening for a “planetary protection officer,” or PPO, and pays an annual salary between $124,406 to $187,000 plus benefits. This job involves preventing alien contamination during NASA space missions. They’re also supposed to prevent any alien microorganisms from reaching earth.Alien Invasion

The application states: The Planetary Protection Officer (PPO) is responsible for the leadership of NASA’s planetary protection capability, maintenance of planetary protection policies, and oversight of their implementation by NASAs space flight missions.

Believe it or not, NASA already has similar positions in existence on a part-time or shared role basis. But NASA and the European Space Agency are the only two agencies where two full-time roles with a similar job description, according to Business Insider.

As for the job intensity, “It’s a moderate level,” Catharine Conley, currently NASA’s sole planetary protection officer, told Business Insider. “It’s not extremely careful, but it’s not extremely lax.”

Alien Invasion is Serious Business

Applicants must have an advanced degree in science or math, and experience “planning, executing, or overseeing elements of space programs of national significance,” according to the job description.

NASA will be accepting applications for a new planetary protection officer through Aug. 14.

So, when your high school reunion comes around and your fellow alum ask you what you do for a living, you can now say, “I protect the earth from alien invasion.”
