Like many places across the country, summer in the Washington, DC, area has been oppressively hot. Too hot to ride their bikes, too hot for trips to the zoo, even too hot for the pool.

The regular 100-degree heat index has kept us mostly confined to indoor activities. In this situation, you quickly run out of movies worthy of a $50 theater visit (by the way, … READ MORE

Our First College Visit – At Age 13?

The wife, kids and I just got back from visiting family in Maryland. While we were there on vacation, we decided to take a side-trip to Annapolis. I grew up not far from the quaint little state capital on the water, and I wanted to share some memories and old haunts with my kids. We window shopped, ate crabs, and bought goofy souvenirs. Of course, it’s not a trip to Annapolis without a tour of the US Naval Academy.

Nerding: A Beginner’s Guide

In just a few short weeks, there’s been a great response to the launch of Raising Nerd, with lots of “interesting” feedback. One consistent response to our articles has been, “Yeah, that’s great, Clueless Dad, but your kid is already a Nerd (proud dad moment). How do we get our kids started on the path to Nerding?”

Win Big NERD Money with Science

Okay, that headline is a bit misleading, but there is money out there to win. But more importantly, there are fantastic opportunities for your Nerd to experience science, robotics and engineering first hand.

Years ago, my own Nerd wanted to learn about coding. Being the Clueless Dad that I am, I went online to investigate. There are a ton of opportunities to learn to program but a global robotics competition caught my eye. Funny enough, it originated from my own company (I really need to start paying more attention at staff meetings).

First LEGO League is the Super Bowl … READ MORE

Nerd-Tastic Things

Welcome home Commander Scott Kelly (@stationcdrkelly). Believe it or not, but this Super Nerd spent an entire year, yes a full year, in space (#YearInSpace). All in the name of science. How insane is that?!?

Why is this important? Well, if we ever want to man a mission to Mars, we’ll need to gain a better understand of how a long space flight might impact the human body. Commander Kelly’s ability to stay sane in a confined space and the sheer endurance test on his body will provide NASA with plenty of data and his return to earth is a … READ MORE

Raising Nerd’s Best YouTube Channels for Nerding

Turn off Disney and Nickelodeon. They’re rotting your Nerds’ brain!

Instead, click on YouTube and catch something that will help grow that massive Nerd brain. YouTube is no longer just a dumping ground for moronic talking fruit (although who doesn’t like a good cumquat once in a while?).

There is a treasure-trove of brilliant and entertaining content that will teach and inspire your Nerd in all areas of science, technology, art and engineering. Who knew the Internet had all of this stuff!

I know what you’re thinking. These will either be a boring 90-year old professor spouting off old world … READ MORE
