Trading a secure and buttoned-up job in finance for a trend-driven and ultra-competitive career as a toy and game inventor isn’t a typical career track. But for Rich Mazel, his dream of inventing and designing cool toys couldn’t wait any longer. Rich swapped coasts in 2013 and joined Hasbro’s Global Product Acquisition team and now heads up the group, taking on the iconic toy brands of Nerf, Transformers, My Little Pony, Playdoh, Star Wars, and so much more.

ecause of his love for tinkering, she knew he needed space. So, she took an old dryer box, shoved it in the corner and filled it with empty soda bottles, Popsicle sticks, and other recycled items and called it “David’s Creative Corner.” Today, David Yakos is the Co-Owner, Director of Creativity, Mad-Scientist, and Inventor Extraordinaire of Salient Technologies, a Montana-based product development firm that has invented everything from rocket fuel valves to pediatric wheelchairs. Yakos is a big believer in the creative process and encouraging kids to learn by experimenting, playing, creating messes, and even failing.

One consistent response to our articles has been, “Yeah, that’s great, Clueless Dad, but your kid is already a Nerd (proud dad moment). My son is a Nerd. Full on science, technology and engineering Nerd. And I couldn’t be prouder.

But I am a Clueless Dad. A liberal arts majoring, marketing and communications professional that hasn’t the foggiest idea of how a rocket ship takes off. (I still believe that it has something to do with a NASA engineer lighting a fuse at the bottom of a rocket like in the Marvin the Martian cartoons). And though I love my son’s enthusiasm and passion for all things Nerdy, I can honestly say that I rarely understand what the heck he’s talking about most of the time.
