Nerd Profile: The Space Explorer (Part II)

On Monday, in Part I of our interview with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab Engineer David Kusnierkiewicz, he shared his early influences, how he got started in the business of space exploration, and his work on the NASA Juno mission to Jupiter. Today, David gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the planning for NASA’s historic journey to the outer solar system and Pluto flyby and other upcoming missions. We conclude with David offering young Nerds some ideas about how they might prepare to reach for the stars themselves one day:

RN: When did you begin planning for the NASA New READ MORE

Nerd Profile: The NASA Intern

What a year it’s been for NASA. It seems like each day since New Horizons waved hello-goodbye to Pluto, the space agency has provided us with new, jaw-dropping perspectives on our solar system while whetting our appetites for future missions and discoveries.

This week, as we witnessed Juno’s rendezvous with Jupiter’s orbit, Raising Nerd took the opportunity to speak with one of NASA’s newest recruits, intern Madeline Gibson, as she begins her exciting career in the sciences by way of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Madeline is a senior at the University of Alabama where she … READ MORE

Nerd Profile: The Hacker

Jake Steve has been a hacker ever since he was a kid, he just didn’t realize it.

I think it took me a while to get comfortable with hacking. I’ve always worked with my hands, even since I was a little kid,” Jake says. “When I was younger, I helped my dad replace the whole rear end in the family Malibu wagon. While I wasn’t able to help with too much — those American car parts are heavy for a 7-year-old — I had an opportunity to learn after the fact. What were junk parts to my dad, became READ MORE

Nerding Nerds In Real Life

“Dad, I Just Had The Greatest Idea …”

No joke, but I probably hear this statement at least 3-5 times per day. The Nerd comes running in from the other room as if his pants are on fire claiming:

“Dad, I just had the greatest idea.”

This typically happens right when I’m knee-deep into something truly important like checking my Facebook status or trying to figure out how this Twitter thing works.

At this point, I have a few choices on how best to react to this potentially world-changing moment:
“That’s great son, but I just got a like for my sleepy puppy video and it’s about to … READ MORE
